The PRAXIS II Sociology 0950 exam is for potential teachers who want to teach sociology in secondary schools. The exam assesses the examinee’s knowledge on theories, theorists, and other concepts in sociology, and the development of sociology as a discipline. Aside from all of these, the exam also assesses one’s knowledge on socialization, social interaction, social disintegration, culture, social structure, urbanization, demography, and social interaction.
The PRAXIS II Sociology 0950 exam contains 120 multiple-choice questions which come from 5 content categories. Examinees are given 2 hours to finish the entire praxis II exam. The exam costs $80. Examinees are to have a bachelor’s degree in sociology to be suitable to take the exam.
The five categories that the exam will be based upon are the following: sociology perspective and methods of inquiry; socialization, social interaction, and social disintegration; culture; social structure, urbanization, industrialization, and demography; and social stratification. There may be questions in the exam that will not count toward your score.

This is the first category of the PRAXIS II Sociology 0950 exam and approximately 20% of the entire number of questions. Questions on this area are about definition of the field of sociology, units of analysis, major theoretical orientations, structural functionalism, conflict theory, history of the discipline, major contributors of sociology and careers in sociology. There may also be questions concerning the purpose of research, scientific method and research process, types of research and ethics of research.
Socialization, Social Interaction, and Social Disintegration
There will be approximately 30 questions coming from this category of the praxis IIexam. Examinees should study on the definition of socialization, roles of heredity and environment, development of self, effects of social class, major theories of socialization, types and agents of socialization, and major stages of socialization.
Furthermore, they should also be knowledgeable on the forms of interaction, contexts and major theories of interaction. They should also know the definition of social disorganization, social problems, theories of social disorganization, deviant and criminal behavior, social control, social movements and collective behavior of social change.
Questions may be about the definition of culture, material and nonmaterial culture, components of culture, subcultures and countercultures, ethnocentrism, and culture relativism, cultural change, cultural diversity and cross-cultural comparisons. This area is 15% of the entire praxis II exam.
Social Structure, Urbanization, Industrialization, and Demography
Questions from this area are about social institutions, structural changes from simple to complex, city models, rural-urban characteristics, historical development, globalization, social change and others. There are approximately 30 questions from this category of the praxis 2 exam.
This is the last category of the praxis II exam and it 15% of the entire exam. Examinees should study on the definition of social stratification, social class, concepts of power, social inequality, functional and conflict theories, social mobility and poverty or life chances.
