If you are planning to teach reading at the elementary level, this is the right exam that you should take. The PRAXIS II Reading across the Curriculum Elementary 5201 exam is designed to individuals who are completing a teacher training program, with at least two or three courses in reading and who are planning to teach.
The exam is composed of 60 multiple choice questions (Part A) and t3 short essays (Part B). Examinees are given 2 hours to take the exam. The examination fee is $90. Examinees are to give their best in answering all questions. They should apply their knowledge about assessing reading, using materials and instructional strategies in a supportive environment to meet all students’ needs, and understanding the development of reading as a complex process of constructive meaning. Since the PRAXIS II Reading across the Curriculum Elementary 5201 exam is divided into 2 parts, each part will take 50% of the total score.
The content of the praxis II exam is based on categories and competencies developed by the Professional Standards and Ethics Committee of the International Reading Association. There are 6 content categories in the PRAXIS II Reading across the Curriculum Elementary 5201 exam; the first 5 categories are under Part A and the last part is under Part B. In part B, examinees are given 3 equally weighted essay questions about analysis of student work and behavior; reading materials, instruction, and environment; and reading comprehension. This test may contain questions that will not count toward your score.
Theory of Reading as a Process and Language Acquisition and Early Literacy
This category is under the first part and it is 20% of the entire Part A exam. Questions are related to the major theories of language development, cognition and learning, and about relationships among reading, writing, listening, speaking for all learners. Questions also include rules and grammar of languages and factors that influence early literacy and language acquisition.
Reading Materials and Instruction and Reading Environment
Examinees are to identify strategies appropriate for a variety of printed materials and for a specific reading purpose. They will also be asked questions regarding evaluating students’ attitudes and needs; techniques for providing opportunities for personal and creative responses to reading; variety of teaching approaches; strategies of exposing students to variety of genres; purposes for reading and more.
Reading comprehension is about 20% of Part A. Common topics being asked are the instructional techniques such as modeling and scaffolding; appropriate and effective uses of oral and silent reading; strategies for using context do define words; techniques that enable students to connect all the topics learned; and ways to develop fluency in students’ reading and its link to comprehension.
Assessment of Reading
This is 13% of the first part. Questions in this area are about strategies appropriate for a variety of printed materials, strategies for recognizing and evaluating students’ attitudes, and techniques for providing opportunities for creative and personal responses to reading.
Vocabulary, Spelling and Word Study
Questions in this area assess the examinee’s knowledge about the strategies and skills contributing to the development of reading, about word study strategies, the use of phonics, and strategies for teaching vocabulary. This is 17% of Part A.
Analysis of Student Work and Behavior
This is the first question of the Part B in the praxis 2 exam. And it assesses the examinee’s knowledge on types of reading difficulties, appropriate formal and informal assessments, and assessment information.
Reading Materials, Instruction, and Environment
This question concerns on these topics: ways to use flexible grouping to accommodate student’s needs; use of text or other materials to foster appreciation of reading; appropriate strategies for teaching reading and for teaching vocabulary; strategies and skills contributing to the development of reading; and strategies to purposefully integrate the language arts in all content areas.
This is the last part of the essay questions in the praxis II exam. Examinees are tested if they have knowledge on how to enhance communication skills in students using reading and writing. This question may also deal with word study strategies, techniques to develop comprehension skills and techniques for teaching study skills.
