The PRAXIS II Music content knowledge 5113 exam is for those who are willing to become teachers in music. The exam assesses a teacher’s knowledge and understanding of music and music education. Examinees should have completed or nearly completed an undergraduate program in music education. Examinees need proper knowledge of such content areas to be able to pass the said exam. Such knowledge is acquired through completion of an undergraduate music education degree program. The praxis II test content assesses key indicators of the beginning educator’s musical knowledge and professional readiness for K-12 music instruction. The material in the praxis II test is not appropriate for those hired in an adjunct capacity to teach a single element of the curriculum such as a teacher hired to teach only individual lessons or classes on a single instrument.

 

The PRAXIS II Music Content Knowledge 5113 exam contains materials that reflect the diversity of examinees’ music instruction specialties as well as cultural and demographic inclusiveness of modern music instruction. Such materials also reflect instrumental (woodwinds, brass, percussion, and strings) vocal, jazz, and general music instruction specialties across the K-12 grade range.

 

The exam contains 120 questions and examinees are given 2 hours to finish the entire exam. The allotted time is divided into a 35-minute listening section (section 1) and an 85-minute non-listening section (section2). At around 30 of the 120 questions are based on recorded musical excerpts. This will cost the examinee $80.

 

Exam questions are based on four content categories: music and literature; theory and composition; performance; pedagogy, professional issues, and technology.

 

Music History and Literature

 

Examinees should understand the history of major developments in musical style and the significant characteristics of important musical styles and historical periods. They should also be familiar with the style of a variety of world music. This is the first category of thepraxis II exam and it is about 14% of the overall questions.

 

Theory and Composition

 

They are asked to understand and analyze music in aural form and demonstrate aural skills through recognition of melody, harmony, and rhythm. They should also understand how musical sounds vary such as the timbre of instruments and voices, and the dynamics. This is 16% of the overall exam questions.

 

Performance

 

In this category, examinees need critical listening skills to be able to identify errors is pitch, intonation of instruments and voices, rhythm, balance and blend, articulation, and dynamics. They should also understand the basic conducting techniques which include the beat patterns, use of baton and freehand techniques, eye contact and facial expressions, tempo and tempo changes, expressive gestures and, cueing. Furthermore, they also need to understand the interpretation of notation and expressive elements for performance in relation to score markings and style periods and they also need to understand basic accompaniment techniques.

 

Pedagogy, Professional Issues, and Technology

 

This is the only category in the praxis II exam that is not applicable on the listening category.

 

In this section of the PRAXIS II Music Content Knowledge 5113 exam deals with questions about instructional strategies for different class settings, standards in panning and instruction, classroom management techniques, instructional practices, strategies to accommodate diverse learning and abilities, how to modify instruction to accommodate student needs, variety of assessment strategies that inform the instructional process, and more about the pedagogy area. Examinees should also read and study topics on professional ethics and legal issues specific to teaching music, music standards in the National Standards for Arts Education, professional organizations, current trend and issues in music education and more. They can also find certain topics on current technologies used for performance and recording production, ways to incorporate technology in the classroom, and the appropriate, ethical, and safe uses for music software and internet technologies. This is approximately 47% of the entire questions in the exam.
