The PRAXIS II Middle School Mathematics 5169 exam is for potential middle school mathematics teachers. Before a teacher can be certified to teach middle school mathematics, he/she should have taken or passed this praxis II examination. Basically, this exam certifies an examinee as a teacher of this specific subject. Individuals who have typically completed a bachelor’s program with an emphasis in mathematics education, mathematics, or education are the only ones allowed to take the exam.
The PRAXIS II Middle School Mathematics 5169 exam has two parts: Part A which is composed of 40 multiple-choice questions and part B which has 3 short constructed-response questions. Examinees will be given 2 hours to finish the entire exam. Examinees will be allowed to use graphing calculators on both parts of the exam. This exam costs $90.
Exam questions in the PRAXIS II Middle School Mathematics 5169 exam revolve around the following content categories: arithmetic and basic algebra; geometry and measurement; function and their graphs; data, probability, and statistical concepts and discrete mathematics; and problem-solving exercises. Examinees are required to understand and work with mathematical concepts, to reason mathematically, to make conjectures, to see patterns, to justify statements using informal arguments, and to construct simple proofs.
Furthermore, they will also be expected to solve problems by integrating knowledge from different areas of mathematics, to use various representations of concepts, to solve problems that have several solutions paths, and to develop mathematical models and use them to solve problems. Additionally, the following process categories are distributed across all the mentioned content categories: Mathematical Problem Solving; Mathematical Reasoning and Proof; Mathematical Connections; Mathematical Representation; and Use of Technology.
Arithmetic and Basic Algebra
This praxis II category involves the examinee’s knowledge on how to apply the order of operations, properties of basic operations, application of the concepts of ration, proportion and percent; recognize the reasonableness of results within the context of a given problem, use estimation and test the reasonableness of the results; order any finite set of real numbers and recognize equivalent forms of a number and classify the number as rational, irrational, real, or complex; how to determine the equations of lines and recognize and use the basic forms of the equation for a straight line; and how to solve and graph linear equations and how to solve problems that involve quadratic equations using variety of methods. This is approximately 20% of the exam.
Geometry and Measurement
Geometry and Measurement category of the praxis II exam is approximately 17% of the exam. Examinees will encounter questions about solving metric and traditional systems, computing perimeter and areas of polygons and circles, application of Pythagorean theorem to solve problems, using relationships such as congruency and similarity to solve problems, solving problems using the relationships among the parts of triangles and special quadrilateral and circles, and more.
Functions and Their Graphs
To be able to answer this category of the PRAXIS II Middle School Mathematics 5169 exam, examinees should first understand function notations, know how to identify whether a graph in the plane is the graph of a function, know how to select an equation that best represents the graph, understand the concept on graphical properties, and know how to translate verbal expressions and relationships into algebraic expressions or equations. This is approximately 13% of the exam.
Data, Probability and Statistical Concepts; Discrete Mathematics
Questions in this category are about topics on how to organize data into a presentation that is appropriate for problem solving, data analysis, solving probability problems involving finite sample spaces by actually counting outcomes, and about solving problems involving average, arithmetic mean and weighted average. Furthermore, examinees are to use and interpret statements that contain logical connectives, solve problems involving the union and intersection of sets, solve basic counting problems involving permutations and combinations without necessarily knowing the formulas, use and interpret matrices as tools for displaying data, draw conclusions from information contained in algorithms, and explore patterns in order to make conjectures, predictions or generalizations. This is approximately 17% of the praxis II exam.
This exam category comprises 33% of the examinee’s score. The focus of these questions will be distributed across the four previously described content categories. Examinees will be expected to integrate knowledge from different areas of mathematics. Examinees will be asked to solve problems, select and use various types of reasoning and methods of proof, recognize and use connections among mathematical ideas, apply mathematical representations to solve problems, and use technology appropriately as a tool for problem solving.
To be able to obtain the certificate necessary to teach middle school mathematics, you should pass the PRAXIS II Middle School Mathematics 5169 exam.
