If you plan to teach deaf and/or hard of hearing students in the public school system, you may be required to take the PRAXIS II Education of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students exam (0271). The PRAXIS II Education of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students test is a two-hour exam comprised of two sections, each worth 50 percent of the exam score. One section contains multiple-choice questions, the other constructed response prompts.
During the PRAXIS II Education of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students exam, test-takers should spend approximately one hour on the multiple choice section, which focuses on two content areas in deaf education: human development and the learning process; and educational policies and practices. Approximately 19 of the questions are about development and learning. Specific topics include language development and use; physiological factors in hearing loss and deafness; and psychological, social, and cultural factors in deaf education. The remaining 21 questions on the PRAXIS II Education of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students exam deal with practices and policies related to the history of deaf education; government legislation; issues, programs, and placement in deaf education; and deaf education curriculum and instruction, including lesson plans, test data, and assessment strategies.
