Praxis II Earth and Space Sciences: Content Knowledge (5571)
The PRAXIS II Earth and Space Sciences content knowledge 5571 exam is made to assess if an examinee is knowledgeable and competent to be a teacher of Earth and Space Sciences in a secondary school.
This praxis II exam is composed of 100 multiple choice questions which should be answered in 2 hours. The questions address their knowledge of fundamental concepts, methods, principles, phenomena, and interrelationships. These questions are also from topics covered in the introductory college level course in the Earth and Space Sciences, including geology, meteorology, oceanography, astronomy, and environmental science. This exam will cost the examinee $80.
Examinees must have variety of abilities such as the ability to comprehend critical concepts, address and solve problems, and understand important terms. Some questions may even require them to integrate content from more than one content area.
The PRAXIS II Earth and Space Sciences Content Knowledge 5571 exam covers six content areas: principles of earth and space science; tectonics and internal earth processes; earth materials and surface processes; history of the earth and its life-forms; earth’s atmosphere and hydrosphere; and astronomy.
Basic Scientific Principles of Earth and Space Sciences
This category includes topics about science methodology, techniques, history, matter and energy, and science, technology and society. This is approximately 8-12% of the entire praxis II exam. Specific topics that examinees should study are the following: scientific inquiry methods; methods to collect data; analyzing data; materials and equipment used in the laboratory; historical roots of the Earth and Space Sciences; structure of matter; relationship between energy and matter; nuclear reactions; issues associated with the various energy sources; and the importance of Earth and Space Sciences to everyday life.
Tectonics and Internal Earth Processes
Questions in this category are about the theory of plate tectonics, deformation of Earth’s crust and resulting features, characteristics of earthquakes and how they provide information about Earth’s interior, layered structure of Earth and related processes, and volcanic characteristics and processes. This is approximately 18-22% of the total questions in the exam.
Earth Materials and Surface Processes
This has the highest percentage in the exam which is 23-27% of the questions. This includes question about minerals, Earth materials, rock cycle, water cycles, carbon cycle, classification and identification of rocks, interaction between biosphere and the geosphere, and the processes of soil formation.
History of the Earth and its Life-Forms
This category is about how rocks are used to determine geologic time and provide a record of Earth’s history, fossil record as evidence of the origin and development of life, and the theories of Earth’s formation and development of its systems including the history of the atmosphere, hydrosphere and Earth’s landmasses. This is approximately 13-17% of the total exam questions.
Earth’s Atmosphere and Hydrosphere
This content category of the PRAXIS II Earth and Space Sciences Content Knowledge 5571 exam includes topics about the unusual properties of water and effect on Earth’s systems, water cycle and the energy transfers involved, basic structure and composition of the atmosphere, effects of natural phenomena on climate change, physical principles and processes involved in meteorology, development of weather systems, characteristics of glaciers and others. This is 18-22% of the total exam questions.
Astronomy is the last content category of the praxis II exam. The remaining 8% are questions about the Earth’s motions and characteristics, relationship within the Earth-Moon-Sun system, characteristics of the component of our solar system, characteristics of stars and the processes that occur within the, the Milky Way and other galaxies, and the theories and observations that relate to the origin and development of the universe.
