The Praxis II Special Education: Preschool/Early Childhood (0690) Exam is developed in order to evaluate the knowledge of prospective teachers of special education in preschool through grade 1 (ages 3 through 6). The test is good for 2 hours and the candidates must be able to completely answer all the 110 multiple-choice questions that has the purpose of assessing the knowledge of basic concepts and principles and the ability to apply that knowledge in real-life situations. The examination is typically taken by examinees who have completed a bachelor’s degree program in special education with appropriate coursework in preschool and early childhood special education. Extensive knowledge of specialty areas , such as education of students with learning disabilities or hearing impairments, is not required.

 

The six content categories cover human growth and development; causes, characteristics, and medical aspects of disabling conditions; evaluation and assessment; planning and delivery of service; family and community aspects; and professional knowledge and intervention models.

 

Human Growth and Development

 

Candidates must be made aware that they should know the aspects of typical and atypical development from conception through age six: cognitive, physical, motor, social and emotional, language, play, perceptual in order for them to successfully pass a few questions in the first part of the exam.

 

Knowledge of Disabling Conditions

 

As a special education teacher, candidates must bear in mind that these people who submitted themselves for the cause of teaching these types of learners are equipped with the knowledge of the causes and characteristics of at-risk conditions and disabling conditions: mental retardation, learning  disabilities, emotional disturbances, vision impairments, hearing impairments, speech and language impairments, physical and health impairments , multiple disabilities, developmental delays, traumatic brain injury; and about the biological, environmental, and nutritional aspects such as toxins , legal aspects, genetics, prematurity, and medical procedures. These are the most important points that the examinee must carefully review on.

 

Evaluation, Assessment, and Eligibility Criteria

 

Educators must be able to evaluate their students to know if there are some progressions or none. Thus, a special education teacher must know how to properly evaluate the performances of children that have disabilities. Examinees are to be made aware of this important part in the teaching-learning process.

 

Planning and Service Delivery

 

Individualized family service plans; individual educational programs; interdisciplinary process; service delivery systems, including caregiver programs and settings; case management, in cases from birth to two years and in cases from three years to five years are the major points that candidates should take note of as this would greatly comprise the 4th phase of the Praxis II Special Education: Preschool/Early Childhood (0690) Exam.
